Can I do my own dust hazard analysis?

The harder question is whether the team can demonstrate the combustible-dust competence, systematic method, independence, and technical responsibility needed for the judgments being made. Familiarity with the process does not by itself establish competence in deflagration scenarios, representative testing, ignition sensitivity, protection methods, building effects, or interpretation of the current requirements. A checklist cannot supply missing expertise.

Before choosing a fully internal path, name the technical lead and reviewer. Record their relevant material and process experience, the method they will use, the evidence available, the systems included, and how uncertainties will be escalated. Consider whether organizational pressure could make it difficult to challenge an accepted practice or leave an expensive finding open.

A sensible hybrid is common: the owner organizes evidence and supplies process knowledge, while qualified independent support leads or reviews the specialist analysis.
