What is the difference between a DHA and a PHA?

A dust hazard analysis is organized around combustible-particulate fire, flash-fire, deflagration, and explosion scenarios. It asks where hazardous material can be generated, released, dispersed, accumulated, enclosed, ignited, or connected to other equipment. It then records the evidence, assumptions, existing safeguards, findings, and actions for the systems in scope.

Compare the work, not the acronym

A process hazard analysis can cover a broader set of process-safety concerns and may use several recognized methods. Its title does not prove that combustible-dust scenarios, representative material data, dust collectors, building effects, ignition sensitivity, or the applicable current standard were addressed. A broad study can contain useful dust work, and a focused DHA can support a broader study, but neither label automatically satisfies the other scope.

Test an earlier report against today’s scope

When reusing an earlier report, compare the actual contents. Identify the materials and process areas assessed, methods used, scenarios documented, safeguards evaluated, open recommendations, exclusions, standard edition, and evidence date. Record gaps explicitly. If the old work omits a relevant system or rests on material data that no longer represents the process, the gap remains even when the report carries a familiar acronym.

Decide from documented coverage

The practical question is therefore not which acronym sounds more comprehensive. It is whether the documented work covers the hazards and decisions the facility now needs to support. A qualified reviewer should make that determination against the actual site and current requirements.
